St. Joseph has long been seen as a role model for husbands and fathers. This is surprising for some people to learn. After all, Jesus’ true father is God the Father, and Joseph served as His foster father during His earthly ministry. Yet, despite Joseph’s unconventional fatherhood, this holy man proved to be the best role model that husbands and fathers could ask for.
There are some people who picture heaven as a place where no one has to do any work. Other people believe that the Church does not truly care about individual workers. Neither of these is true. Pope Pius XII pointed this out definitively when he instituted the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker in 1955. We observed this feast earlier this week, and we recognize it every May 1.
St Joseph is a very special, and often overlooked Saint. Adopted father of Jesus and husband to Mary, Joseph was the protector of the Holy Family. Joseph showed mercy to Mary when he didn't understand how she came to be with child. He ensured that Jesus had a safe place to be born, and that Mary and Jesus had a safe place to live their lives.
