Third Word | Seven Last Words of Christ
The third word is from John 19:26–27: Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother.
This is all about Mary to me. I find Mary so powerful and impactful in such a quiet and elegant way. At the Feast of Cana, she tells Jesus to perform His first miracle. She exhibits a strength and finesse that are commendable.
As a father of three children, I am reflecting on this outside the box! I read this utterance as taking responsibility. When we love someone, there is an inherent risk of getting hurt. When those we love get sick or stray, it is difficult. The love we give is not always reciprocated. People can say things and do things that we may not agree with or that we feel are a slight towards us. This can include husbands, wives, children, family, or friends. It is painful when someone we care about is hurting or is hurting us. But we have a responsibility to love that person even though it might cause pain. We need to take that chance. We need to look at them as a brother or sister in Christ, to behold the beauty of their creation. We need to deeply love one and other.
If there is someone in your life that you love but you have not spoken to them, please reach out and extend the love that Jesus has for you towards them. Be a shining star in a dark night.
