24. The Holy Family | 25 Gifts of the Church
The fact that God came into the world through a human family is a beautiful mystery that we could spend a lifetime pondering. The Holy Family lived a seemingly ordinary life in Nazareth where they worked, cared for their child, and participated fully in their Jewish faith. However, we know that their life was extraordinary because it was the domestic church where Jesus was nurtured before his ministry. Just like the Holy Family, our families are meant to be domestic churches where we foster love, pursuit of virtue, and most of all, relationship with God. We can look to the Holy Family as an example to imitate and also as a powerful intercessor. Mary and Saint Joseph want us to be close to Jesus like they were, and they are interceding for us and our families from heaven.
As we ponder this gift of the Holy Family, let's also ponder the gift of our own families. Whether they are family by blood, adoption, or friendship, whether they are broken, dysfunctional, small, or large, each family is a small glimpse of heaven.
In our series House + Home, we visit families with a variety of different stories. In our August 2018 CatholicTV Monthly Magazine we featured a photo story about the Phelps, a local Catholic family living out their faith together. Check these out and be inspired by other families who are on the journey of faith! And if you have a family member who has fallen away from the Church, read this blog for some ideas about how to lovingly encourage them to come back.
